Towards the end of his life the American psychologist Abraham Maslow revisited the theory that had made him so very famous. - In the ‘Hierarchy of Needs’ (1943) Maslow taught us, that we – as individuals and as civilisation – would climb various stages until we finally reach what he called ‘self-actualization’. On this elevated and beautiful plateau we would be concerned with few things but with choosing the right path for our life, the right dress for the party and the holiday destination that best matches our star-sign. Encounters at 5,000 Feet (Two Lessons)

Meeting the composer Arvo Paert on a plane to Copenhagen I had the chance to gain insight into his interesting philosophy and into his way of working. On first sight composing may not be too related to managing design and innovation -- on second sight it of course very much is. Lesson One touches rather more general aspects of identity and social interaction. Lesson Two goes down to the very essence of design management though. -- In managing creative projects — much like in composing or conducting it seems — the most important rules a pretty much the same.
