Encounters at 5,000 Feet (Two Lessons)

Meeting the composer Arvo Paert on a plane to Copenhagen I had the chance to gain insight into his interesting philosophy and into his way of working. On first sight composing may not be too related to managing design and innovation -- on second sight it of course very much is. Lesson One touches rather more general aspects of identity and social interaction. Lesson Two goes down to the very essence of design management though. -- In managing creative projects — much like in composing or conducting it seems — the most important rules a pretty much the same. The Heartbeat of Innovation

Discipline and decisiveness are the most important virtues when it comes to managing creative projects. — Why? Because you have got no chance to influence a design process once it has started. — If you say to your creative force: “Here is about 80% of the necessary data.
